Hyperliquid Community Debates HyperEVM’s Positioning and Developer Experience

Hyperliquid community members have raised a dispute over HyperEVM’s positioning, arguing it was not designed as a general-purpose Ethereum execution environment but as a specialized execution layer intended to work in combination with Hypercore. According to Odaily, the community said HyperEVM’s core design should rely on corewriter and precompiled contracts rather than being used as a general-purpose Layer 1. Community members said the current developer learning curve is high, and interactions with system addresses are complex. They added that cross-asset operations can require multiple transactions and are inefficient, and that in many cases asset swaps are less efficient than automated market maker mechanisms. The community also said HyperEVM has faced a long-running issue of being “overlooked,” which they attributed to the team focusing resources on core products such as HIP-3, HIP-4, and portfolio margin, resulting in insufficient investment in ecosystem development. Community suggestions to increase HyperEVM ecosystem activity included improving developer tools, optimizing the corewriter mechanism, and incentivizing more on-chain experimental applications similar to DeFi Summer-style projects. They said that without such changes, smart contract innovation may continue to slow.
