The article says the central commercial opportunity in the agentic era may lie in the trust infrastructure that connects the model, the money, and the payment rail. It explains that most current AI use remains advisory, but agentic systems can go further by identifying a transaction, checking whether it fits an agreed mandate, authenticating to a merchant, obtaining spending authority, completing the transaction, and updating a user’s itinerary. The article cites Visa’s view of a progression from assisted commerce to autonomous payments, Mastercard’s framing of machine payments as high-frequency and low-latency transactions, and Meta’s vision of personal AI operating continuously across finances, home management, and commerce. It then outlines the four-layer architecture in more detail, emphasizing that an agent’s technical capability is different from its legitimate authority. The governance layer is described as the place where programmable delegated authority is established through typed mandates, credentials, controls, authentication, and protections. The decision layer determines what should happen next within bounded autonomy, while the asset layer uses tokenization to make securities, funds, deposits, collateral positions, and commercial claims understandable to software. The settlement layer uses stablecoins and other forms of digital money to move value through APIs and blockchain infrastructure, with strategic value coming from the ability to orchestrate multiple settlement methods based on price, availability, jurisdiction, and risk.
