Highschool teachers protest against data centre project during court hearing
A Kansas high school physics teacher was arrested after repeatedly clapping during a public hearing on a proposed AI data center, turning a routine zoning meeting into the latest flashpoint in the growing national backlash against artificial intelligence infrastructure.
According to local broadcaster KWCH, Lux Claridge, a physics teacher at Emporia High School, was handcuffed and escorted from an Emporia City Commission meeting after applauding residents who spoke against the proposed 1,000-acre Flint Hills Digital Campus.
Before the hearing began, city commissioners warned attendees that demonstrations such as clapping, snapping or other audible reactions would be treated as disruptions. After several warnings, police removed Claridge from the chamber while the meeting continued.
After posting out on bail, Claridge told KWCH
"I'm glad to be out—but this is an inconvenience, really. It's not really deterring me from speaking out or, I guess, clapping."
Claridge said he intends to plead not guilty when he appears in court in September. His brother, David Claridge, condemned the arrest and said he was exploring options to hold local officials accountable.
"This isn't going to hold up in court. Lux is going to fight them on that. I'm looking at avenues to get these people recalled. This is insane to me."
Despite vocal opposition from residents, the Emporia City Commission approved the zoning changes required for the AI data center to proceed.
AI data centers face mounting resistance nationwide
Claridge's arrest comes as communities across the United States increasingly push back against the rapid expansion of AI data centers, citing concerns over electricity consumption, water usage, noise pollution and the public subsidies often offered to developers.
Technology companies argue that massive computing facilities are essential to support the next generation of AI services and maintain the country's competitive edge. Opponents, however, question whether local communities are being forced to shoulder the environmental and infrastructure costs while receiving limited long-term benefits.
The debate has intensified throughout 2026.
A report published by the Brookings Institution in January warned that local concerns over energy demand, water consumption and environmental impacts were becoming significant obstacles to proposed AI data center developments. In April, Maine lawmakers approved legislation temporarily pausing construction of large AI data centers while policymakers assessed their potential impact on local communities.
Public opposition emerges as one of AI's biggest expansion hurdles
Resistance has since evolved into a nationwide movement.
Earlier this month, Reuters reported that campaigners organised 142 protests across 42 states in what was described as the first coordinated national demonstrations against the rapid buildout of AI infrastructure. Protesters called for greater transparency during project approvals, stronger protections for local energy and water resources, community benefit agreements and increased accountability from developers.
The demonstrations stretched across Texas, Georgia, California, Pennsylvania, Florida, Indiana and dozens of other states, highlighting how concerns over AI infrastructure have spread well beyond isolated communities.
Public opinion appears to be shifting in the same direction. A Reuters poll conducted in June found that only 14% of Americans support building an AI data center in their own community, underscoring the growing political challenge facing one of the industry's fastest-growing sectors.
Claridge's arrest may have begun with applause during a public meeting, but it reflects a much broader conflict unfolding across the United States as governments, technology companies and local residents clash over the future footprint of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
