U.S. Representative Greg Casar said Democrats should summon artificial intelligence company CEOs to Congress to answer questions about the risks posed by their companies if Democrats win control of the House next week. According to Sina Finance, Casar, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said Democrats should make oversight hearings a priority and could use subpoenas to compel executives to attend.
On Thursday, Casar and 19 other Democrats sent OpenAI a letter questioning the company’s dismissal of three safety researchers. The letter said the researchers were accused of leaking sensitive company information to an outside researcher, while the employees disputed OpenAI’s account. The lawmakers asked OpenAI to pledge not to dismiss whistleblowers and to maintain its pause on its most advanced models until independent third-party oversight is established. They requested answers by November 12.
An OpenAI spokesperson said the personnel decisions were unrelated to safety concerns or public statements, and that the company remained committed to constructive engagement with Congress and relevant committees on AI safety.
