Castle Island Ventures co-founder Nic Carter commented on Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call to slow frontier AI development. According to ChainCatcher, Carter said the proposal makes sense if the goal is to widen the gap between the public and the true frontier and if competitors are willing to cooperate.
Carter said Anthropic's main business risk is model commoditization driven by distillation, rather than safety concerns. He added that safety and profit incentives align when limiting public access to frontier models, since the highest-value use of frontier tokens is internal research and capturing downstream intellectual property, not public API sales.
Carter also said unilateral restraint cannot solve the prisoner's dilemma and that coordinated restraint would require antitrust exemptions or regulation. He noted that Anthropic has limited access to models such as Mythos Preview to a small number of partners, while Amodei has called on the U.S. government to provide limited exemptions for safety discussions so companies can voluntarily set standards.
