European stocks opened broadly lower again, with selling in Italy particularly heavy and the overall backdrop firmly risk-off.Brent crude traded above $107 a barrel after another attack on Saudi energy infrastructure this week sparked fresh supply concerns. The 10-year US Treasury yield rose above 5.02%, its highest since October 2023.US futures pointed lower, with S&P 500 futures down about 0.4% and Nasdaq futures 0.3% after Wall Street was led lower by technology stocks. No Single Variable Explains ItThe distinguishing feature of this session is that nothing in particular went wrong.Oil above $100, Treasury yields above 5%, a more hawkish Fed outlook and lingering AI uncertainty are each individually manageable. Arriving together, they remove the offsets that normally cushion any one of them.An energy shock usually coincides with growth expectations that support earnings. Rising yields usually accompany an expanding economy. AI weakness usually occurs against a supportive rate backdrop.None of those offsets is currently available, and that is what separates a broad decline from a rotation.Italian Banks Are the Specific Weak PointItaly's benchmark index led the decline after a sharp selloff the previous session, with bank stocks especially under pressure again. That concentration is not incidental. Italian banks carry substantial sovereign debt on their balance sheets, which makes them the most direct equity expression of European long-end yield moves.Long-dated sovereign yields have hit multi-decade highs simultaneously across the US, Japan, Germany and France. The ECB raised its deposit rate to 2.5% last week while lifting its 2027 and 2028 inflation outlook, with Deutsche Bank's Mark Wall saying another December move now looks "more likely than not."A bank holding government paper at pre-repricing prices faces mark-to-market pressure that has nothing to do with its lending book.Yesterday's selloff also hit technology names, with Prysmian and STMicroelectronics among those affected. The Long End Is Doing More Damage Than the Policy RateWednesday's decision addresses overnight funding. The move pressuring equities is happening further out the curve. The 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.40%, its highest since June 2007. The 10-year rose 6.2 basis points to 5.021%, outpacing the two-year's 4.4 basis point move to 4.676% — a steepening that reverses the flattening Friday's CPI produced.ING rate strategists noted the disconnect: "Logically, a rate hike should have calmed the long end, yet the long end is typically extremely volatile."Mischler Financial's Tom di Galoma attributed the move to rate expectations, increased corporate and government debt supply, growth prospects and concern about the long-term US fiscal path. "Our budget, deficit, and overall debt structure continue to expand," he said.Only the first of those four resolves when a tightening cycle ends.Technology Carries the Most Duration RiskEquities weighted toward cash flows years forward reprice hardest against a rising long end, which is why technology led both sessions. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 5.9% Monday in its worst session since July 1, with the Nasdaq 100 at a six-week low. Nvidia dropped more than 4% while Intel, Micron and SanDisk each fell over 7%.The AI uncertainty di Galoma's list does not cover has its own source. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for the industry to slow development over the weekend, with OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk agreeing — a warning originating with the people whose revenue depends on the pace continuing.Anthropic separately signed a $13.7 billion six-year compute agreement with Rumble the same day.The Oil Constraint Is PhysicalBrent above $107 reflects a supply bottleneck rather than a risk premium.Saudi Arabia closed the East-West pipeline, which runs to the Red Sea port of Yanbu and exists specifically to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. With Hormuz disrupted and the bypass shut, production fell to 6.238 million barrels per day — the lowest since 1990. Bab El-Mandeb has also come under threat, closing the remaining alternative.A risk premium unwinds when tensions ease. An export bottleneck unwinds only when a route reopens.President Trump suggested Monday that the conflict could end soon, and prices dipped before resuming their climb on the latest infrastructure attack. The Fed Cannot Address Most of ThisMarkets price a 25 basis point increase at roughly 87% to 93% depending on venue, with UBS, HSBC, Barclays, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and JPMorgan all expecting the move.Their paths diverge sharply after it — UBS at 50 basis points this year, Bank of America at 75, Deutsche Bank running through March 2027, and Jefferies expecting fewer than markets price.QCP Capital identified the bind: continued energy prices could keep the Fed restrictive, while economic data weakness caused by those same costs would argue for patience.Bitcoin traded around $77,000 after crossing $79,000 Monday, having reclaimed its 50-week exponential moving average at $77,430 before slipping back. The decision comes Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. ET, alongside updated projections and a Warsh press conference.
