Rescuers Race To Free People Trapped After Delhi Building Collapse

According to the BBC, a residential building in Delhi collapsed on Sunday, leaving dozens of students feared trapped inside and killing at least one person. NDTV, citing local police, said two others were in critical condition and six people had been rescued so far. Eyewitnesses told local media that as many as 50 people were inside the five-storey Hostel Daze building in south-west Delhi's Satya Niketan neighbourhood when it came down around 13:30 local time (08:00 GMT). Construction work had been taking place in the basement, and many of the students staying there were believed to be in their rooms because there were no lessons on Sunday. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said an adjacent building had been evacuated as a precaution, while police said the building was 40 or 50 years old. The National Students' Union of India called for an investigation into the collapse and for anyone responsible to be held to account.
