According to Sina Finance, Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) proposed that Samsung Electronics prepay 20 trillion won, or about $15 billion, for electricity charges tied to its grid expansion projects through 2031. An internal KEPCO document also said the utility proposed a 5 trillion won prepayment from SK Hynix.
KEPCO said in a statement that it has put forward the prepayment plan to major power users, including Samsung and SK Hynix, but details such as participants, interest rates, payment amounts, and payment terms have not been finalized. The company said the proposal is intended to help meet rising investment demand from semiconductor and artificial intelligence data center projects, while providing more stable power supply guarantees for new corporate factories. KEPCO said it will use the funds to build transmission and substation networks for chip manufacturing plants and will pay companies interest above the yield on two-year Korean government bonds.
