According to CNBC, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with House Republicans on Wednesday as lawmakers faced fallout from President Donald Trump's trade war with Canada and his plan to import beef. Rep. Ralph Norman said the discussion was lively and that lawmakers were raising concerns about tariffs and Canada, while Rep. Tim Burchett said there did not appear to be any talks with Canada underway. The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on a range of goods in late August after trade talks broke down, and Canada retaliated with its own tariffs. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Ottawa was trying to escalate the dispute for political reasons, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney blamed the Trump administration for the collapse in talks.
