OpenAI Ends Model Supply Contract for Cursor After SpaceX Acquisition

OpenAI said it has notified SpaceX that it plans to terminate the contract to supply models to coding tool Cursor, with a proposed cutoff date of November 12, 2026. According to Sina Finance, OpenAI said this is the longest notice period allowed under the contract and that it is intended to preserve access for developers as long as possible. OpenAI said it will not provide future models, including Astra, to Cursor, while Cursor may choose to end the partnership earlier. The company said the two sides have worked together for nearly four years and cited prior contract disputes involving Elon Musk's companies. OpenAI said the customized contract includes a limited termination window after a change of control. SpaceX announced in June that it would acquire Cursor parent Anysphere in an all-stock deal valued at about $60 billion, and the transaction closed earlier this month. Cursor CEO Michael Truell said OpenAI models account for about 5% of Cursor user traffic and that the team is still in talks with OpenAI. Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown said the company will continue adding computing power to support Claude in Cursor and said he looks forward to Cursor's next step after joining SpaceX.
