Hungary's Sulyok Signs Amendment Ending Presidency Early

According to Lianhe Zaobao citing BBC, Hungary's President Tamás Sulyok signed a constitutional amendment on Saturday, July 18, that will end his term early, and parliamentary speaker Fostohor will serve as acting president from Monday, July 20. The amendment must also be signed within five days of parliamentary passage, and Sulyok did so before the deadline, meaning his presidency will end at midnight on Sunday. The amendment follows a political shift in April, when Péter Magyar's center-right Tisza Party won the general election and secured a two-thirds majority in parliament, defeating former Prime Minister Viktor Orban after 16 years in power. The Tisza Party had repeatedly urged Sulyok to resign, arguing that he could not remain politically neutral because of his ties to Orban's camp. The revised constitution also limits lawmakers to 12 years in office and sets the retirement age for Constitutional Court judges at 70. Parliament must elect a new president within 30 days after Sulyok leaves office.
