ECB President Lagarde Stresses Importance of Central Bank Independence

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde emphasized the importance of maintaining central bank independence amid increasing global challenges. According to Jin10, Lagarde noted that governments might be inclined to exert more control over monetary authorities, making it crucial to uphold the credibility needed to exercise such independence. She stated, "In a world that is becoming increasingly difficult, the challenge is not just to maintain legal independence but to preserve the credibility required to exercise it." Lagarde highlighted that historical lessons show that building trust takes a long time, while losing it can happen instantly. Lagarde pointed out that over the past decade, the "factual independence" of central banks in nearly half of the countries, which account for about 75% of global GDP, has deteriorated. She also stressed that policymakers are facing an increasingly adverse environment, characterized by more frequent supply shocks, rising fiscal pressures, and declining public trust in institutions. In this changing landscape, credibility earned through actions is becoming crucial.
