Goldman Sachs CEO Downplays AI's Impact on Job Losses

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon has expressed skepticism about fears that artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to widespread job losses, according to ChainCatcher. In an article for The New York Times, Solomon argued that concerns over AI-induced unemployment are exaggerated, suggesting that the U.S. economy will continue to create new jobs through technological advancements, similar to past industrial revolutions and the internet era. Goldman Sachs projects that AI and automation could affect approximately 25% of current work hours over the next decade, with significant impacts expected in white-collar sectors such as banking, accounting, and law. Stanford research indicates that recruitment for entry-level positions in highly automated fields like software engineering and customer service has decreased by 16% compared to less automated industries. However, Solomon highlighted that AI is also generating new employment opportunities. Since 2022, the construction of data centers in the U.S. has created over 200,000 construction jobs. While Goldman Sachs may reduce roles in compliance and account opening, it plans to increase hiring for client-facing positions in banking, trading, and asset management. Solomon believes AI is more likely to enhance productivity rather than eliminate 25% of jobs outright. He emphasized that technological progress does not always align with cultural changes, and the potential for job replacement does not guarantee it will occur.
