Bitwise's chief investment officer, Matt Hougan, has significantly revised his projections for the adoption of on-chain finance following a surge in investor activity on crypto platforms like Hyperliquid. According to Cointelegraph, this shift occurred amid the recent U.S.-Israel attack on Iran, which saw investors flocking to trade tokenized assets. In a post titled "The weekend that changed finance," Hougan highlighted that Hyperliquid became a focal point for trading real-world assets such as crude oil and tokenized gold while traditional stock exchanges in the U.S., Europe, and Asia were closed during the initial attack on Saturday at approximately 3:30 am UTC.
Hougan noted that on-chain finance dominated the financial landscape for most of Sunday, challenging his previous belief that traditional markets would take five to ten years to transition on-chain. He now anticipates this shift will occur much sooner, citing blockchain's continuous trading capabilities as a significant advantage over conventional stock exchanges and T+1 settlement processes. Over the weekend, Hyperliquid experienced over $11.5 billion in trading volume, with Bloomberg referencing its crude oil contract as the most pertinent price indicator. Additionally, Tether's tokenized gold product, Tether Gold (XAUt), saw its 24-hour trading volume exceed $300 million, while prediction markets on platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket also experienced increased activity.
In January, the New York Stock Exchange and its parent company, the Intercontinental Exchange, announced plans to facilitate 24/7 trading and instant settlement of stocks and exchange-traded funds through a blockchain post-trade system. This system will include multi-chain support and custody features, although no specific timeline or details about the blockchain's structure have been disclosed. For the time being, Hougan emphasized that hedge funds, banks, and other investors aiming to remain competitive must establish stablecoin wallets and familiarize themselves with trading on crypto perpetual platforms like Hyperliquid.
