On November 7, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham was preparing to use two European summits in November to pursue closer economic ties with the EU and reduce the impact of post-Brexit trade barriers on UK growth. According to Sina Finance, Burnham will attend the European Political Community meeting in Dublin on November 12 and travel to Brussels for the UK-EU summit on November 20, as the government seeks to advance slow-moving bilateral talks. The negotiations mainly cover youth mobility, agricultural trade and carbon emissions rules. Disagreements remain, including over the EU’s demand that the UK resolve the issue of tuition discounts for EU students separately, rather than linking it to UK businesses’ eligibility to participate in EU industrial policies. The UK government wants to lower costs for British businesses by easing some trade restrictions and simplifying regulatory procedures. Since becoming prime minister in July, Burnham has shown more flexibility on EU policy than his predecessor, Starmer. The government is assessing options including a dedicated economic partnership, rejoining the EU customs union or the European single market, and potentially rejoining the EU in the future. The options carry different political and economic costs: rejoining the single market could improve UK businesses’ access to trade but would require accepting free movement rules, while a customs union could avoid some immigration disputes but offer more limited economic benefits. The discussions have raised concerns within the UK Labour Party. Some lawmakers representing constituencies that backed Brexit in 2016 fear renewed debate over immigration and national sovereignty could deepen domestic political divisions and create an opportunity for Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. Recent polls show increased public support for closer EU ties, but that does not necessarily mean voters want to revisit years of Brexit-related political debate. The EU is also cautious about whether the UK can turn its more positive political statements into concrete agreements.

Kenya-based conservation group Save the Elephants now uses AI to analyze about 200,000 aerial survey photos in a few hours, a task that previously took nine staff members nine months. According to Sina Finance, environmental organizations are increasingly relying on AI to protect wildlife, monitor forest fires, and conduct research, even as they worry about its environmental costs. A survey of 15 conservation and development organizations found that all used AI to some extent and were concerned about its impact. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that global data centers’ annual electricity use will reach about 945 terawatt-hours by 2030, roughly twice the current level, while related carbon dioxide emissions will exceed 300 million metric tons. Annual water consumption by data centers could rise from 560 billion liters in 2023 to 1.2 trillion liters. The United Nations has called for greater transparency about AI systems’ environmental effects. The COP31 climate conference in Türkiye this month also plans to promote commitments to sustainable AI development. The Jane Goodall Institute is using Amazon Web Services technology to digitize handwritten records from a chimpanzee research project in Tanzania. Work initially expected to take 13 to 15 years could be completed in about two years. Conservation International uses satellite imagery and AI to alert forest patrols in Cambodia to fires. The Nature Conservancy analyzes fishing-vessel footage with onboard AI cameras, reducing the need to transmit large amounts of data to remote servers. The World Resources Institute limits resource use by restricting high-compute image and video generation and reusing existing AI analysis. Greenpeace remains skeptical of the continued expansion of data center infrastructure. Conservation organizations face the challenge of using AI to improve environmental protection while controlling its energy and water consumption and carbon emissions.

Bernstein raised its Apple price target to $380 from $370 and maintained its Outperform rating, implying about 12% upside from the stock’s November 2 closing price of $338.32. According to Sina Finance, CEO John Ternus recently called Apple “the best company in the world,” while Bernstein said whether it is also the most attractive stock to buy depends on investors’ views of its AI prospects and valuation. Bernstein noted that Apple has more than 2.5 billion active devices, giving it a large user base for future AI services, though turning that potential into profits may take longer. Apple reported fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 revenue of $114.5 billion, up 12% year over year, and diluted earnings per share of $2.10, up 14%; both exceeded expectations. iPhone revenue rose 17% to $57.6 billion, and Mac sales increased 24%. Apple expects December-quarter revenue to grow 7% to 10% year over year, above market expectations. Bernstein said rising costs and Apple’s high valuation could limit further share-price gains. The company expects a December-quarter gross margin of 45% to 46%, below market expectations, amid higher memory-chip prices, while slower growth in the App Store and licensing business weighs on the services outlook. Bernstein cut its earnings-per-share estimates to $9.78 for fiscal 2027 from $9.90 and to $11.13 for fiscal 2028 from $11.26. Apple’s forward price-to-earnings ratio is about 35.1, compared with a historical average of 22.7 since 2016; Bernstein said further hardware cost increases or slower-than-expected AI commercialization could leave the stock more exposed to earnings estimate cuts.

On November 7, Swiss drugmaker Novartis said it would stop developing its experimental cardiovascular drug pelacarsen for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease after a trial found no reduction in heart attacks, strokes, or cardiovascular deaths. According to Sina Finance, the seven-year Phase III Lp(a) HORIZON trial enrolled 8,322 patients and found that pelacarsen lowered lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), by an average of 78%, but showed no clear cardiovascular benefit in any patient subgroup. The study was the first completed Phase III cardiovascular outcomes trial targeting Lp(a), a lipoprotein largely influenced by genetics and associated with higher risks of atherosclerosis and blood clots; about 20% of the global population has genetically elevated Lp(a). Senior study author Steven Nissen, a cardiovascular specialist at the Cleveland Clinic, called the results “completely neutral,” saying the drug had neither benefit nor harm. Novartis will retain one mid-stage study to assess whether pelacarsen can slow the progression of calcific aortic stenosis. The drug had previously been viewed as a potential blockbuster, with annual sales once expected to reach billions of dollars; the trial result presents a new challenge for strategies to prevent cardiovascular events by lowering Lp(a).

Yi He said Binance has no legal way to move funds directly out of another user's account after a user lost money by transferring coins to the wrong account while using two separate apps, and that she will personally cover the loss, according to a post on X. She said Binance cares about its users the way they care about Binance. Yi He explained that for historical compliance reasons Binance operates three local sites developed entirely independently, with product architecture and business models that differ from the main platform and focus mainly on local fiat trading. To prevent a repeat, she said Binance Pay transfers will add three confirmations. She also invited users to submit product suggestions in the comments, saying the product team will pick the 10 best ideas and reward each with 1 BNB over a one-week period.

Web3Auth said it is working with Keplr to move assets from affected wallets to secure recovery wallets following a wallet security incident. According to Odaily, Web3Auth published verified recovery wallet addresses for Cosmos Hub, Osmosis, Celestia, Akash, Noble, Injective, dYdX, Babylon, Axelar, Saga and Agoric, as well as EVM addresses spanning eight chains, after some recovery transfers were mistaken for attacker activity. Web3Auth said the listed addresses are being used to transfer affected assets safely and are not controlled by attackers. It plans to publish more verified addresses and advised users to follow official announcements and beware of impersonation scams and fake asset recovery requests.
