Fireblocks is deepening its push into AI-powered finance with the launch of its new Agentic Payments Suite, a platform designed to help autonomous AI agents send, receive, and manage payments using stablecoins.

The company also announced it has joined the x402 Foundation, an industry alliance aiming to turn Coinbase’s x402 protocol into a universal payment rail for AI agents — a sign that some of the biggest players in crypto and Big Tech are now racing to build the financial infrastructure for machine-driven commerce.

Fireblocks Wants AI Agents Spending Stablecoins

Fireblocks said its new Agentic Payments Suite is built to manage the full lifecycle of AI-driven payments, including wallet infrastructure for AI agents, merchant acceptance systems, compliance checks, and settlement tools for regulated financial institutions.

The broader goal is clear: position stablecoins as the native payment layer for AI-powered economies.

According to Idan Ofrat, even a small shift toward AI-controlled spending could dramatically accelerate stablecoin adoption. More than one billion people already use AI assistants daily, Ofrat noted, arguing that if users begin delegating purchasing authority to AI agents, stablecoin transaction velocity could surge across blockchain networks.

That prediction is increasingly shared across the crypto industry. Executives including Brian Armstrong and Jeremy Allaire have both argued that AI agents could eventually become larger users of blockchains than humans themselves.

The Race to Build AI Commerce Infrastructure Is Accelerating

The launch comes amid a growing push by both crypto companies and major technology firms to prepare for an internet where software agents autonomously transact online.

Earlier this month, Amazon Web Services integrated Coinbase’s x402 protocol into Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, enabling AI agents to make payments in USDC through AWS-managed payment controls.

At the same time, Oobit rolled out a Visa-supported virtual payment card allowing AI agents to make purchases in USDT on behalf of businesses. Fireblocks’ latest move positions the company directly inside that emerging ecosystem.

A major theme behind the announcement is the growing belief that traditional payment systems may not be capable of supporting machine-to-machine commerce at scale. Ofrat argued that card networks and bank transfers were never designed for instant, programmable, autonomous transactions between AI systems. Stablecoins, by contrast, can move value globally in real time while supporting programmable execution directly on blockchain networks.

Fireblocks is effectively betting that AI agents and stablecoins will evolve together — with autonomous software increasingly needing a native digital payment system to operate efficiently online.

Adoption Remains Early Despite the Hype

Despite the excitement, AI-agent payments are still in their infancy.

Data from x402.org shows that only about $24.2 million in transaction volume has moved through the x402 protocol over the past 30 days, underscoring how early the market still is.

Ofrat compared the current moment to the early development of credit card infrastructure, noting that trust layers, compliance systems, and payment controls took decades to mature. Still, the list of companies now backing the x402 ecosystem suggests momentum is building rapidly.

The x402 Foundation already includes major firms such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Visa, and Mastercard, alongside crypto-native organizations like Circle, Polygon Labs, and Solana Foundation.

For Fireblocks, the message is becoming increasingly clear: the next major stablecoin adoption wave may not come from humans — but from AI agents spending money autonomously on the internet.
