According to the BBC, police in Sydney are investigating a second suspected mistaken-identity killing linked to organised crime in less than 48 hours. Emergency services were called to a home in Merrylands West at about 15:15 local time on Wednesday after reports that a man in his 40s had been targeted in a drive-by shooting; he died at the scene. A day earlier, at about 03:40 on Tuesday, a university student in his 20s with no criminal ties was shot during a home invasion in Glen Alpine in the city's southwest and also died at the scene.
Police said the Tuesday killing appeared to be an innocent person killed by organised crime, while Wednesday's attack may have targeted the wrong person. Det Supt Simon Glasser said the victim had no known links to organised crime, but had associated with people living at the address. New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon described Tuesday's killing of Marco Tapia as completely unacceptable. Police also said a known organised crime figure posted on social media shortly after Tuesday's shooting that the offenders had "popped the wrong person" and not hit the right house.
