PPP prediction market monitoring showed that the Polymarket event on whether the U.S. government will ban open-source artificial intelligence models in 2026 was pricing the "Yes" probability at 16%. According to Odaily, the market would resolve to "Yes" if the U.S. federal government restricted public access to or use of an open-source AI model before December 31, 2026 through legislation, an executive order, export controls, or other formal policy action. Eligible open-source AI models are general-purpose large language models or multimodal foundation models whose model weights and source code can be publicly downloaded and run on hardware controlled by users, including Meta Llama, Mistral, DeepSeek, and Qwen. OpenAI strategy chief Dean W. Ball said on X that the U.S. government might use softer legal measures to block open-source models from entering the United States, while White House science and technology adviser David Sacks said using regulatory uncertainty to suppress open-source competition was "unacceptable."
