UK Companies Raise Prices at Fastest Rate in Over Three Years Amid Rising Costs

UK companies have increased prices at the fastest rate in over three years as they attempt to pass on soaring raw material and energy costs to consumers, despite a sluggish overall economic backdrop. According to Jin10, a survey by S&P Global of the private sector revealed that six out of ten companies experienced rising cost burdens in April, with firms reporting higher fuel and wage costs, alongside increasing metal and plastic prices. Output price inflation reached its highest level since January 2023. Many companies are implementing fuel surcharges to offset input costs, which have accelerated at the fastest pace since the early stages of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has previously noted that weak pricing power among companies could help mitigate the second-round inflation effects triggered by soaring energy prices. However, the PMI survey indicates that many firms have successfully maintained price hikes, increasing the risk of a wage-price spiral.
