STOCKS | Fed Rate Hike Reshapes AI Financing Landscape
The Federal Reserve's latest rate hike may be the most important near-term variable for the AI industry. According to Sina Finance, higher short- and medium-term borrowing costs are likely to curb the debt-driven AI boom, especially with the possibility of another rate hike later this year. The biggest hit from higher rates will likely fall on small companies with weak or no credit ratings that urgently need funding, including emerging cloud providers planning new cloud infrastructure and data center projects. Rum Group, for example, plans to build a large data center in Georgia to support a project with Anthropic, but the financing has not yet been secured. The ripple effects of higher rates will eventually reach all players, including major technology companies spending heavily to expand AI data centers. Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Google have already borrowed aggressively and gained some breathing room. On Monday, Amazon issued 4.2 billion pounds of bonds, or about $5.7 billion; combined with the $67 billion it raised in the first half of the year, its debt load has nearly doubled. Amazon's securities filing showed that most of this year's bonds are fixed-rate debt, meaning its interest expense will not rise even if rates increase. Google and Meta have also issued bonds to varying degrees. But at their current spending pace, they will still need to borrow again soon. Amazon's borrowing has been used to cover heavy capital spending and investments in Anthropic and OpenAI. As of June 30, the company's cash balance stood at $123 billion, roughly unchanged from December 31. After June 30, Amazon added another $21 billion to OpenAI, completing a $50 billion investment commitment. S&P Global Market Intelligence data showed analysts estimate Amazon will burn through $10 billion in cash in the second half of the year and another $43 billion in the first half of 2027. Large technology companies still have better financing conditions than smaller firms because of their high credit ratings, but the impact of the Fed's rate hike should not be underestimated.
