AI Campaign Ads Deepen Trust Concerns In U.S. Elections
According to Axios, AI-generated campaign ads are making it harder for voters to trust what they see and hear, as political tech experts warn that synthetic media could deepen Americans' already declining trust in politicians and institutions. Texas Senate nominee Ken Paxton recently released a realistic ad targeting Democratic nominee James Talarico that used an AI-generated version of Talarico to deliver some of his controversial remarks, sometimes stripped of context. The ad was based on real comments, but it altered some wording while using synthetic video. Experts quoted by Axios said the broader backlash against AI, including fights over data centers, is feeding skepticism toward artificial media. Stanford Law AI Initiative co-director Nate Persily said AI exacerbates the trend of Americans losing faith in elite institutions, while Cornell Tech Policy Institute director Sarah Kreps said voters want authenticity rather than AI-generated content. Persily also said the main harm is not only that people may be fooled, but that bad actors can dismiss real material as a deepfake. UC Irvine epistemologist Cailin O'Connor said even when voters recognize an ad as synthetic, the emotional impact can remain. Axios reported that not all political AI is equally deceptive: cartoonish ads for Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt were described as more meme-like than deepfake-style. Federal legislation on political AI is essentially nonexistent, while many states require disclosures for potentially deceptive ads and allow looser rules for clearly satirical content. In New York, state Democrats recently asked election officials to investigate a Republican gubernatorial campaign's AI ad over allegedly missing "materially deceptive" labels; the campaign said it was satire.
