ASIA NIGHT SESSION | Nikkei Futures Ease as Yen Firms; Hang Seng Night Futures Add 55 Points, Taiwan Futures Edge Up
According to JPX official data, HKET and Taiwan's Economic Daily News, Asian index-futures traded in a cautious overnight session, with U.S. markets shut Monday for the Labor Day holiday, oil prices climbing on renewed Middle East tensions and gold marking time ahead of U.S. inflation data, while the yen firmed to a roughly seven-month high near 154 per dollar amid growing expectations the Bank of Japan will accelerate rate hikes. In Japan, the near-month Nikkei 225 index futures (September contract) settled the Osaka Exchange overnight session at 65,040, down 170 points, after trading between a high of 65,610 and a low of 64,920, per JPX official figures, reflecting a softer tone as the stronger yen weighed on exporters. South Korea's KOSPI 200 night futures were trading in the overnight session, but no same-morning Korean media report on the night-futures close was available, so no night-session figure is reported for Korea this session. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index futures September contract closed the after-hours session at 25,281, up 55 points, while the Nasdaq Golden Dragon China index eased 1.7% to 5,950 as U.S. cash trading was closed for the holiday. In ADR trade, HSBC's London listing was about 1.06% above its Hong Kong close, while Tencent and Meituan ADRs slipped 0.50% and 0.38% respectively. Taiwan's TAIEX futures (September contract) ended the night session at 47,055, up 100 points or 0.21%, opening at 46,855 with a high of 47,273 and a low of 46,561 on volume of 31,998 contracts, after the cash TAIEX closed the prior session at 47,105, down 220 points.
