Quantum Computing Threatens Cryptographic Security of Digital Assets

According to Cointelegraph, a proposal submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Crypto Assets Task Force highlights the potential threat posed by quantum computing to the cryptographic foundations of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the broader digital asset ecosystem. The proposal, titled the Post-Quantum Financial Infrastructure Framework (PQFIF), was authored by Daniel Bruno Corvelo Costa and outlines a roadmap for transitioning digital assets to quantum-resistant standards. It warns that without safeguards, trillions of dollars in digital assets could be at risk if current encryption methods fail under quantum attacks. The proposal, issued on Wednesday, emphasizes the urgency of addressing advancements in cryptographically relevant quantum computers (CRQC), which could undermine the security protecting vast amounts of assets. This could lead to systemic risks, catastrophic investor losses, and a complete erosion of market confidence. A significant concern is the "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later" threat, where adversaries collect encrypted data now to decrypt once quantum breakthroughs occur. The proposal calls for early action, recommending automated vulnerability assessments of digital asset platforms and prioritizing high-risk systems like institutional wallets and exchanges. It also suggests a phased migration using both classical and post-quantum cryptography, integrating standards finalized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 2024. One urgent issue is the potential systemic risk of a sudden quantum breakthrough, which could result in massive investor losses and operational chaos across custodians and payment processors. Experts warn that "Q-Day," when quantum machines can crack Bitcoin’s encryption, could arrive as early as 2028. The proposal stresses the need for establishing a quantum-resilient digital asset ecosystem to secure investor assets and ensure the long-term integrity of U.S. capital markets. In July, Bitcoin developers proposed a new Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) titled “Post Quantum Migration and Legacy Signature Sunset.” This proposal calls for phasing out Bitcoin’s current signature schemes in favor of quantum-resistant alternatives. The phased migration would initially block users from sending funds to older addresses vulnerable to quantum attacks, and eventually freeze all Bitcoin stored in such addresses, rendering them unspendable. David Carvalho, CEO of Naoris Protocol, recently expressed in an opinion piece for Cointelegraph that the rise of quantum computing poses the most serious threat to Bitcoin’s security yet, potentially capable of breaking its cryptographic protections within five years or less.
