Independent U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders renewed his call Wednesday for a nationwide pause on AI data center construction, following Democrats’ midterm election wins. According to Sina Finance, industry representatives said a slowdown in U.S. construction would redirect demand overseas, where markets could absorb the capacity; Futurum Group CEO Daniel Newman said demand forecasts had not changed and site selection was now interchangeable.
Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced the AI Data Center Moratorium Act in March, calling for a pause until national safeguards protect workers, civil liberties and the environment. On X, Sanders said Americans do not want large technology companies to harm the environment, destroy jobs and threaten humanity’s future. Arizona Democratic Rep. Yassamin Ansari also urged Democrats to prioritize pausing advanced AI development, regulating what she called an out-of-control industry, and banning AI superintelligence after taking office.
In Texas, Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in the midterms and called for a halt to new data center construction until lawmakers establish effective protections. Responding to the election results, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk again promoted space data centers, saying they looked quite attractive now.
