A Zcash community member named joshs has proposed fully ending the development fund before its scheduled expiration in November 2028. According to Foresight News, joshs argued that an earlier proposal to eliminate the Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) portion while retaining funding allocated by holders would be an incomplete measure that concentrates authority in one group. He said the fund should either continue as planned until November 2028 or be terminated entirely.
Currently, 20% of each Zcash block reward goes to the development fund: 12% is allocated through quarterly holder votes for retroactive grants, while a five-member ZCG committee distributes 8%. Joshs said he proposed the current arrangement in 2025, when funding was scarce, but new private funding teams have since joined. With the ZEC price rising, the two funding pools are now worth a combined total of more than $300 million, prompting disputes over allocations. He said control over fund distribution has become a means of influencing Zcash, that voting power tied to holdings could be bought, and that some community members are reluctant to speak publicly for fear of losing funding.
