US technology and artificial intelligence stocks fell in pre-market trading Monday after leading CEOs renewed concerns about the pace of AI development over the weekend.Cryptocurrencies moved the other way. Bitcoin gained about 1% over 24 hours to $77,800 and ether added 1% to $2,500.Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for the industry to slow development to allow safety measures to catch up. OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk, whose xAI developed Grok, voiced agreement. The Selloff Came From Inside the IndustryThat provenance is what makes the move unusual.AI-sector drawdowns this year have come from external shocks — China's DUV lithography breakthrough, margin guidance, financing conditions. A coordinated safety warning from the three most prominent CEOs in the field is a different category of signal, because it originates with the people whose revenue depends on the pace continuing.South Korea's Kospi fell 3% and SK Hynix, whose memory chips are used by AI companies, dropped 6%. The Invesco QQQ ETF fell 1.5% pre-market.Neocloud providers Nebius and CoreWeave fell 6% and 5%. Chipmakers Sandisk and Intel each lost 5%.Anthropic also reportedly selected Nasdaq for its anticipated IPO, while Altman confirmed OpenAI will not go public in 2026.Anthropic Signed a $13.7 Billion Compute Deal the Same DayRumble bucked the selloff entirely, gaining 10.7% after The Information reported a $13.7 billion compute agreement with Anthropic. The six-year deal has Anthropic leasing capacity from Rumble's Maysville, Georgia data center. Anthropic also received warrants for up to 50.8 million Rumble shares. The two developments sit awkwardly together. A company calling for the industry to slow down committed $13.7 billion over six years to compute capacity on the same day. Both can be coherent — slowing capability development while securing infrastructure are separable decisions, and a six-year lease reflects a long planning horizon rather than a sprint. But markets pricing an AI slowdown while the company advocating it signs a deal of that size are responding to the statement rather than the behaviour.JPMorgan Skipped Neutral on IREN and Named the Pricing NumberJPMorgan upgraded IREN two notches, moving to overweight from underweight and lifting its price target to $65 from $46, calling the company a top neocloud provider. The specific data point behind it matters more than the rating. Neocloud contract pricing has moved to $15-$20 per megawatt from $10-$15 — an increase of roughly a third to a half. That reframes the sector's economics. The concern through recent weeks has been input cost inflation: Nvidia guiding third-quarter gross margin to 74% from 75% with a first-quarter price increase planned, copper at a record above $6.80 per pound, and rising power and land costs.Pricing power moving up 33% to 50% on the revenue side is the offset that debate had been missing.JPMorgan also noted customer prepayments are helping fund GPU purchases, and said IREN's planned 0.5-gigawatt expansion next year could win materially higher pricing than previous contracts.IREN fell 3.4% to $42.33 regardless, caught in the broader selloff. The Crypto Miners That Pivoted Are Being Punished TwiceThe neocloud cohort is where the AI selloff reaches crypto directly. Those companies lagged badly through Bitcoin's recent rally — the median gain across the top 10 mining stocks was 1.8% against Bitcoin's 22%, with Core Scientific and TeraWulf trailing by 27% and 24%.The AI pivot removed their beta to Bitcoin without delivering AI beta on the upside. Monday demonstrates the other half: they carry full AI beta on the downside while Bitcoin itself gains.IREN holds $2.8 billion in contracts across Microsoft, Nvidia, Perplexity and Figure AI. Hut 8 has its Beacon Point lease. HIVE signed a $350 million GPU cloud deal lifting contracted annual recurring revenue to roughly $180 million. The JPMorgan pricing data suggests the contracts themselves are improving. The equities are not reflecting it.Oil Climbed While Long Yields Edged LowerBrent crude rose more than 3% to $107 a barrel and WTI traded above $103.Longer-dated Treasury yields edged lower, with the 10-year just below 5% and the 30-year at 5.355%.That combination is a departure from the past two weeks, when oil strength and yield strength moved together. Yields easing while crude climbs suggests the bond market is treating this leg of the energy move as demand destruction rather than inflation impulse — higher prices constraining growth rather than feeding through to sustained inflation.Precious metals retreated, with gold falling almost 1% to around $4,300 and silver declining 1.5%.Bitcoin rising while gold falls, AI stocks sell off and oil climbs is an unusual combination that does not fit the debasement, risk-on or safe-haven frameworks cleanly.Strategy and Strive Continue on Opposite TracksStrive acquired 469 Bitcoin last week, bringing holdings to 25,000 BTC, funded by selling its SATA preferred stock — which continues to trade right around its $100 par value. ASST rose 0.5% pre-market.Strategy made no Bitcoin buys or sells, holding 845,050 coins, and repurchased 1.4 million shares of its STRC preferred for $139.3 million using cash on hand. STRC trades at $98.64, modestly below par. MSTR was flat pre-market.The divergence has now run for weeks. One company issues preferred at par to buy Bitcoin. The other spends cash repurchasing preferred trading below par, having doubled its buyback authorization to $2 billion.CoinShares Swung to a $23.9 Million LossDigital asset manager CoinShares reported a first-half loss of $23.9 million against a $77.6 million profit a year earlier. The company plans to seek shareholder authority for a share repurchase program at Tuesday's EGM. CEO Jean-Marie Mognetti pointed to no long-term debt, approximately $453 million of net assets and substantial available capital.Shares fell more than 8% to $4.93 pre-market.A $453 million asset base against a $23.9 million half-year loss gives the buyback room, though announcing a repurchase alongside a swing to loss invites the question of whether capital is better deployed in the business. The Fed Meeting Begins TuesdayThe two-day policy meeting starts tomorrow, with nearly all now expecting a 25 basis point increase. The two-year Treasury yield reached 4.61% after Friday's CPI as traders assigned close to certainty. Core CPI rose 0.3% against 0.2% expected, with headline at 0.4% monthly and 3.4% annually.Jefferies expects the Fed to deliver fewer than the 3.5 hikes markets price long term, with global economist Mohit Kumar arguing the first move is a credibility matter while subsequent ones depend on the war's duration and oil prices.Santiment data shows Bitcoin-denominated open contracts fell 13.5% between September 3 and 11 against a 5% price decline, leaving positioning roughly 20% below pre-rally levels. The Clarity Act cloture vote falls Tuesday. The Fed decides Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
