The yen strengthened to 152.99 — its best level since February — triggering stop-loss orders and raising carry trade unwind risk, while copper hit a record above $6.80 and Brent approached $100. Canada slapped 15%-50% tariffs on US goods, escalating the trade war. Bitcoin slipped below $78,000 but capital is rotating into altcoins rather than leaving — the CoinDesk 20 and memecoin index both gained while the large-cap index fell. Bitcoin ETFs remain $1B short of breaking even for 2026 despite August's $3.52B surge. Friday's CPI is the last variable before the September 16 FOMC.Copper Hits Record High and Yen Strengthens to 152.99 as Risk Assets Sell OffCopper rose 2% to a record above $6.80 — former Goldman Sachs commodity chief Jeff Currie: "You cannot build data centers, expand grids, or electrify industry without copper." Brent approached $100, WTI gained 3.5% to near $95. The yen reached 152.99, its strongest since February, as markets price 75% odds of a BOJ hike September 18 — the carry trade unwind risk that crashed Bitcoin 20% in days during August 2024 is the specific mechanism to watch. Bitcoin's 90-day correlation with the 10-year sits at -0.17 versus gold's -0.41, which has kept it steadier than the metal through yield moves — but a carry unwind is mechanical selling, not rate-driven repricing, and correlation data doesn't capture it. Bitcoin dominance fell for a fifth straight day to 59.35%.Canada Slaps Tariffs of Up to 50% on US Goods, Risking Wider Trade WarCanada imposed 15%-50% tariffs on hundreds of US products, raising steel levies from 25% to 50% and adding new duties on motorcycles, cosmetics, and cheese. PM Carney's bet: making the trade war's cost real enough for US businesses in Michigan and Ohio — swing states with heavy Canadian trade — that Washington returns to the table. Trump announced a preliminary agreement August 18 that collapsed within days. US tariffs of 50% on ~$20B in Canadian goods are already in effect; Canada is now matching with an equal amount targeted. Oxford Economics estimates combined tariffs will cut Canadian output by ~0.3% from baseline. Trump has threatened 50% auto tariffs from January 1. Public opinion in Canada runs nearly 3-to-1 in favor of Carney's stance.Bitcoin ETFs Remain $1 Billion Short of Breaking Even in 2026 Despite August SurgeAugust brought $3.52B in ETF inflows — the strongest month of 2026 — followed by $770M so far in September. But June alone erased $4.51B, and the year-to-date deficit remains roughly $1B. The asymmetry is the key point: outflows in this product category arrive faster than inflows. Bitfinex's framing is the sharpest read: the test is whether ETF allocators keep buying through a rate environment that would historically have stopped them — the 2-year Treasury hit a 52-week high near 4.4% after August's payrolls beat, and markets price 58% September hike odds. Bitcoin's -0.17 yield correlation versus gold's -0.41 has held so far. Oil at a three-month high above $94 is a different mechanism — mechanical risk-off rather than rate repricing — and one the correlation data doesn't capture.Bitcoin Slips Below $78k as BNB Chain and DeFi Tokens Buck the SelloffBitcoin fell below $78,000, roughly 5.3% below the $82,320 high it failed to clear last week. Ether held at $2,490, Solana -0.06% to $103.77. BNB stood out at +2% to $754 with CAKE and SYRUP also gaining. The index split tells the story: CoinDesk 5 -0.47% while CoinDesk 20 +0.2% and the memecoin index +0.41% — capital rotating down the market cap curve, not leaving. Aerodrome Finance's AERO surged 17% with a record 129M tokens in futures OI — rising price, rising OI, positive CVD, the signature that distinguishes genuine accumulation from short covering. Injective's INJ +10% showed the same setup on a breakout above $6. Both stand out against a broader market where most majors show negative CVDs.Yen Rally Through Key Level Puts 2026 High Within ReachThe yen broke through 155 per dollar, triggering stop-loss orders and forcing options dealers to sell dollars — strengthening as much as 0.8% to 153.16, up 4% for the month and the best G10 performer. Overnight index swaps price a 97% chance of a BOJ quarter-point hike next week. National Australia Bank's Rodrigo Catril: the break of 155 "clearly opens the door" to test prior lows at 152.27 and 152.10. SMBC Nikko's Rinto Maruyama warned a break below 154 could trigger further unwind and stop-losses. The two-week implied volatility in dollar-yen hit its highest since May 2025. The key risk: if the BOJ hikes but fails to signal further moves before year-end, the dollar-yen could rebound toward 155 as structural headwinds — wide Japan-US rate gap, trade deficit — reassert. Friday's US CPI and next week's BOJ meeting are the two events that decide whether the yen's rally extends or reverses.
