Kenya Warns Foreign Nationals They Must Have Work Permits

According to the BBC, Kenya's trade ministry has warned foreign nationals that visa-free entry does not allow them to work, as the government moves to shut down unlicensed small businesses run by foreigners. President William Ruto had set a deadline for foreigners operating small-scale businesses to stop work, while the Burundian embassy in Kenya said it would offer emergency free travel documents to citizens willing to return home amid reports of mistreatment. The trade ministry said some visitors had misused visa applications by entering as investors or tourists and then taking part in business activities in breach of their declared status. Trade Minister Lee Kinyanjui said foreigners involved in retail and local trade must align their activities with work permit rules. Kenya's foreign affairs ministry later said foreigners with the required documentation, including work permits and licences, could continue their activities.
