According to the BBC, at least two people were killed and 58 injured after an explosion at a military barracks in Viacha, about 30km from La Paz, with authorities warning the toll could rise. Bolivian Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano said “pyrotechnic material” detonated at about 14:30 (18:30 GMT) on Friday at the base, where an artillery regiment is stationed. Health official Rita Nebraska told local television that between 10 and 15 people were believed to have died, while police said dozens of homes were damaged and emergency workers were searching the rubble. Nebraska warned of a risk of further explosions and urged people to stay at least 150m away from the military base. Police spokesman Roger Roca said fireworks had been stored at the barracks and that the cause remained under investigation. Viacha authorities declared three days of mourning.
