Anthropic Says Chinese AI Labs Are Using Fraudulent Means To Copy Claude

According to CNBC, Anthropic’s head of threat intelligence, Jacob Klein, said foreign adversaries are accessing Claude models through illicit distillation to train competing systems and sell lower-priced copycat versions. He said the company has seen an illicit ecosystem using stolen credit cards, compromised AI accounts and other fraudulent methods to evade controls, and he singled out Chinese AI lab Moonshot AI as one of the firms it says is ripping off its technology. Anthropic has also accused DeepSeek, MiniMax and Alibaba of distilling its models, while OpenAI and Google have both published reports on the issue. Klein said the threat is intensifying as Anthropic’s private market valuation has climbed to close to $1 trillion and the company is expected to go public as soon as October.
