More Than 80 Feared Dead After Boat Drifts In Atlantic For 27 Days

According to the BBC, more than 80 people, including a baby, are feared to have died after a boat drifted in the Atlantic Ocean for 27 days. Spanish Maritime Rescue teams found 44 survivors and five bodies on board the vessel, which was located about 65 nautical miles southwest of Gran Canaria's coastal town of Arguineguín on Wednesday. The boat is believed to have left The Gambia in early August with 127 people aboard. Human rights activist Helena Maleno Garzón, founder of the Spanish charity Caminando Fronteras, said 83 people had died. Maritime Rescue said rough seas prevented crews from recovering the five bodies, and three survivors were airlifted to hospital in critical condition while the rest were taken by sea to Gran Canaria and disembarked early Thursday morning.
