Samsung Electronics Plans Four New Wafer Plants by 2030

Samsung Electronics is refining its investment plan for large-scale semiconductor production bases in South Korea and plans to build four new wafer plants by 2030. It has already shared the proposal with major partners, according to Odaily. Samsung Electronics plans to build plants in Pyeongtaek P5 and P6, one wafer plant in the semiconductor cluster in Namsa-eup, Yongin, and one new wafer plant in Gwangju. SK Hynix is expected to build Y1 and Y2 in the semiconductor cluster in Wonam-myeon, Yongin, and another new wafer plant in Gwangju, bringing the two companies' total number of new wafer plants from this year through 2030 to seven. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix announced a semiconductor equipment investment roadmap worth 3,200 trillion won on the 29th of last month, excluding AI data center investment costs. Samsung Electronics moved up its target for completing the Yongin wafer plant to 2040 from 2047, while SK Hynix advanced its target to 2033 from 2045. An industry source said Samsung Electronics recently asked partners whether they were interested in making additional investments in Gwangju on the premise of building a wafer plant there before 2030. However, the source said feasibility remains uncertain given current capacity and Gwangju's infrastructure.
