A leading European tech investor has warned that Europe’s dependence on U.S. technology and capital has become a strategic vulnerability. According to Jin10, Lakestar founder Klaus Hommels said recent U.S. restrictions on Anthropic’s AI models were the latest sign that Europe needs greater technological autonomy.
Lakestar said it has raised a $300 million "resilience" fund to invest in dual-use technology and defense-tech companies in Europe and other NATO allies. Hommels said U.S. venture firms can help support European defense-tech startups, but added that overall governance must remain in European hands. If tensions escalate, he said, the governance structure must be able to prioritize European interests.
