WHO Says Up to 45% of Dementia Risk Is Linked to Modifiable Factors

According to Lianhe Zaobao citing AFP, the World Health Organization said as much as 45% of dementia risk is tied to modifiable factors and could be prevented or delayed through healthier lifestyles, better disease management and reduced environmental risks. The WHO on Wednesday, July 15, released updated guidelines on preventing and delaying dementia, saying there is still no cure. It said smoking, alcohol use, social isolation, lack of exercise, air pollution, and noncommunicable diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes are modifiable risk factors. The new guidance said prevention remains the most effective way to reduce dementia cases, and that more physical activity, quitting smoking, cutting alcohol intake, eating a healthy diet and reducing air pollution can lower risk. For adults with mild cognitive impairment, it recommends cognitive stimulation and training. Better control of hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol can also help reduce dementia risk. The WHO said dementia affects memory, thinking and the ability to live independently, is the seventh leading cause of death and disability among older adults globally, and affects 57 million people worldwide, with nearly 10 million new cases each year. It said Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60% to 70% of cases. Dementia costs the global economy about USD 1.3 trillion a year, about half of which comes from unpaid care provided by family and friends.
