The EU is reportedly considering a proposal to grant member states additional fiscal flexibility to address the high energy costs resulting from the situation in Iran, according to sources familiar with the matter. According to Jin10, the European Commission is discussing a proposal that would allow governments to spend an additional amount equivalent to about 0.3% of their GDP on energy-related expenses, beyond the established EU fiscal framework. This measure would act as an 'exemption clause,' similar to the 'defense spending exemption' previously granted to member states. Italy, which has long struggled with high debt levels, has been one of the strongest advocates for greater fiscal flexibility from Brussels in recent months as it deals with rising energy costs.
