U.S. Republican lawmakers are advocating for a permanent ban on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) in the upcoming vote on the 21st Century Housing Act in the House of Representatives. According to ChainCatcher, Representative Mike Flood stated that the revised House bill aims to overturn the implicit approval of CBDCs and make the ban permanent. If the bill passes the House, it will return to the Senate for potential further amendments. Representative Warren Davidson supports the permanent ban, arguing that the 2030 expiration date effectively provides a pre-launch development period for CBDCs. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer is also promoting his 'Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act,' which passed the House last July but has yet to receive Senate approval. Emmer has warned that the adoption of CBDCs in the U.S. would eliminate privacy and economic freedom.
