The Trump administration is contemplating the imposition of new 'national security tariffs' on six industries. According to Odaily, insiders have revealed that the potential tariffs could affect sectors including large batteries, pig iron and iron accessories, plastic pipes, industrial chemicals, and equipment for power grids and telecommunications. These tariffs would be implemented under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. The proposed tariffs on these six industries would be separate from a new global 15% tariff. It remains unclear when the Department of Commerce will announce these tariff investigations or when they might be enacted. Section 232 mandates a lengthy investigation before tariffs can be imposed, but once in place, the President can unilaterally modify them.
